The Women in Games Game: The Intricacies of Intervention in Feminist Game Studies

In this informal talk, Alison Harvey introduces her interventionist work in feminist game studies, discussing the conceptual, methodological, and practical challenges faced in the context of a misogynistic zeitgeist in games culture. She links these practices, oriented towards academic-activism and social justice, to the teaching of game studies and the development of a new Master’s programme in Media, Gender, and Social Justice at the University of Leicester. She concludes by providing a glimpse into how this is articulated in two book-length provocations she is making in media and communication theory (Feminist Media Studies) and methods (Dirty Methods). Dr Alison Harvey is a Lecturer in the School of Media, Communication, and Sociology at the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom. Her research focuses on issues of inclusivity and accessibility in digital culture, with an emphasis on games. Her work has appeared in a range of interdisciplinary journals, including International Journal of Cultural Studies, Social Media & Society, Feminist Media Studies, Studies in Social Justice, and Information, Communication & Society.
